Chapter 14: The Book of the Dead

Babi had the kitchen light on and a tray of kolaches in the oven at one in the morning.

She was in her bathrobe, with the handkerchief up the sleeve of it, and she did not ask me a thing.

She took my coat, sat me at the oilcloth table and put a mug of hot milk with honey in front of me.

Then she sat down across from me and folded her hands.

"I said yes," Babi said.

"To what?"

"To Frank's match." Her chin shook once and stopped. "At Easter, after the dance. He came to this table with a plate of apricot kolaches and told me what the Lodge needed."

"What did the Lodge need?"

"A Chair with a wife who would stay," Babi said. "I thought he meant a good girl for a lonely man."

She turned her cup a quarter turn on the oilcloth.

"I thought, Zorinka laughs at the band leader and the Chair watches her do it. That is a match. God sends those."

"Babi," I said.

"I said yes, and I was proud of it, and I put it in the Book of the Living in my own hand in July."

She looked at me with her wet gray eyes.

"And then in October I wrote you in the Book of the Dead, and I knew while I wrote it that it was a lie, and I wrote it anyway, because the other thing was Frank's boys at my door."
