Chapter 19: Epiphany
Zora's POV
The Book of the Dead lay open on the long table at the front of the hall, with a brass lamp on one side and a plate of salt bread on the other.
It was noon on Epiphany, and there were no kolaches anywhere in the building.
Two hundred and forty people filled the folding chairs.
I had counted them from the door.
I sat in the second row beside Babi, in my mother's green dress, with Anton on my other side.
He had put on his funeral suit again, and he held his hat on his knee, and he was looking at my hands.
I let them lie open in my lap so that he could.
At the table, in the Chair's seat, sat the man who ran the Lodge's meetings when the Chair was not fit to.
He was a Beta so old and so deaf that nobody could remember a vote he had not called correctly.
"The Lodge is called," he said. "Frank Matula has the floor."
Frank stood up slowly and held his hat against his chest.
He looked every inch the old friend, sorrowful and sound.
"Neighbors," Frank said. "I'd rather be anywhere. I am going to say three things, and I ask you to hear me out."
He held up one finger. "The Chair has not been what he said. You heard it in this room at Christmas, and I won't say it again, because it shames the boy."
He held up a second. "The refusal made by his wife in October was never answered, and by the old law it stands."
"And the Book of the Dead holds her name. A dead woman's pup belongs to the Lodge. I move that the Lodge take the child when it comes, and raise it where the Lodge can see it."
