Chapter 16: The Invoice

Brody came in without knocking, still in yesterday's shirt.

He had shaved badly. There was a nick on his jaw.

"You called," he said to Regan. Then he saw me, and his whole face changed.

"Sit down," Regan said. "Both of you. And keep a foot of air between you, because my walls are glass."

I sat.

Brody took the chair beside me and left a careful foot of air.

Regan slid a single sheet across the desk.

"The recruiter's invoice for Maddie's placement," she said. "Our accounts payable pays those from the Kincaid operating account. This one never touched it."

Brody picked it up.

The bill was plain, with a firm's name at the top and a fee of eighteen thousand dollars.

At the bottom, under PAID BY, was a company name I had seen on a wedding rider.

MacIntyre Brands, LLC.

He read it twice. I watched him do it.

The muscle in his jaw went tight and then slowly let go.

"Hayes paid for her," he said.

"Hayes paid to put her in your building," Regan said. "The recruiter took his money and our brief, and sent the one woman in America my brother couldn't keep his hands off."

"Regan," I said.

"I'm sorry. I'm being funny because I'm furious."

Brody laid the invoice flat on his knee.

"I asked you if you took this job to get to me," he said. He didn't look up. "In my office. I said it like an accusation."
