Chapter 24: The New Rule

On Monday at nine, every Kincaid employee in New York crowded into the Meridian ballroom.

Three hundred of them stood between the round tables I had set for a charity gala, holding coffee and whispering.

I knew what the whispering was about.

I stood at the back with Lena, who had taken a personal day to watch.

"I'd like it noted," she said, "that I told you this would be a terrible, wonderful week."

"It was two weeks."

"The terrible part went long."

Regan walked to the microphone on the little stage. She had put on her best navy blazer and her glasses were pushed up into her hair.

"Good morning," she said. "Our CEO has something to say, and I'd like everyone to hold their questions, their phones and their opinions on the gossip pages."

A ripple of laughter went through the room.

Brody walked out from behind the curtain.

He wore the charcoal suit and no tie, and he held a single sheet of paper.

He looked at the crowd, and then, for one second, over their heads at me.

"I wrote a rule my first week here," he said. "Two years ago. You know it. It's on the wall of every staff room."

"Staff are off limits."

He held up the page.

"I wrote it because my father broke it, and paid for it with other people's jobs. He had power over a woman who worked for him, and she had nowhere to go."
