Chapter 11: Weightless

We lifted off Hob's Rest at dawn, patched, painted and half fed.

Ysmae followed us out in the Ember, a black shape in my rear view.

I felt better with her there than I had any right to.

The Anvil picket was ninety minutes ahead.

"Captain," Biscuit said, "the new coolant line is leaking."

"How badly?"

"It is spraying the cargo bay with something that I would describe as aggressively cold."

"Fix it."

"I can fix it in an hour if I cut the gravity plating. The line is behind it."

"An hour?"

"Sixty minutes of floating, Captain. Please do not waste them."

The gravity went with a lurch that took my stomach with it.

I let go of the stick and the autopilot took over, and I drifted up out of my seat.

I laughed.

I couldn't help it.

I hadn't been weightless on my own ship since I was a child.

Havrik was floating over the second seat, his braids lifting around his head.

His blue face wore an expression of wonder.

"Oh," he said. "This is how you live."

"This is how I live."

"I understand now why you never come down."

I kicked off the console and sailed toward him, and he caught me by the waist with one hand.
