Chapter 22: The Debt
"Mother Elder," Havrik said.
"Sit down, Warlord. I am speaking to the pilot."
"With respect, I hired her."
The eldest elder turned her old black eyes on him.
"Then tell me what you hired," she said. "Tell this hall what you saw."
Havrik's hands closed and opened at his sides.
He did not look at the Premier or the cameras.
He looked only at the elder.
"I hired a pilot," he said. "What I owe her for it is between us, and she has not yet let me pay."
A murmur went through the benches.
"What I saw was a pilot who flew me through a war because I asked her, and because she would not be ordered."
"I saw a woman who has not slept one night in ten years without what she sold."
"I saw someone I would follow down a lane into Orrun Deep, if Orrun Deep still stood."
He drew a breath.
"She owes me nothing. I have wronged her, too. I stand beside her if she will have me, and I stand where she tells me if she will not."
The hall was silent.
My eyes were stinging.
I hadn't known he would say any of it.
