Chapter 14: Returned
Fintan came into the kitchen loosening his tie, and stopped.
He looked at me on the stool, in my coat, and then at his wife.
"What's she doing in my house?"
"Your house," I said.
"Petra's house. Same thing now." He dropped his keys on the marble. "Pet?"
Petra picked up her wine glass and didn't look at either of us.
"She came to say goodbye," she said. "She's going."
I got down off the stool.
Fintan walked me to the front door himself, close behind me.
On the step he leaned down to my ear.
"Mum wants Petra at the house on Thursday night to sign the new company's papers," he said softly.
"Come near my wife before then and I'll have you lifted for trespass."
"Thursday," I said. "Thank you."
He shut the blue door in my face.
At nine the next morning I sat at Ottoline's table and emptied my account of the Fitzsimonses' money.
It took four taps and a code.
I didn't send it to Fitzsimons & Sons. I didn't send it to Fitzsimons 1851.
