Chapter 16: One Night

I leaned against a keg and made my voice very calm.

"Is the folder with you?"

"It's on the table. Downstairs."

"Then go down, pick it up, and walk out the front door with it."

"I can't just walk out of Cecily's dinner, Ness."

"Why not? I did."

There was a silence with a tap dripping in it.

"His name's on it," Petra whispered. "In his own pen. The fountain one I gave him."

"Then that's the only copy in the world with his name on it. Don't leave it on her table."

"Where do I even go?"

"Your mother's. Anywhere. Just not back to that chair."

She hung up without saying goodbye.

I stood among the kegs with the phone against my chest until Cian put his head out of the back door.

"Well?"

"I don't know."

He didn't ask anything else. He came out and stood beside me in the cold, his shoulder against mine.

Twenty minutes later my phone lit up.

A photograph, no words. The navy folder on the passenger seat of a car, under a seatbelt.
