Chapter 14: The Morning That Belongs To Her
Cormac Deane places two mugs of terrible coffee on the bedside table before I open my eyes.
The smell reaches me first. Burnt beans, hot water, and the particular confidence of a man who has never been punished for making coffee badly.
I keep my eyes closed.
The mattress shifts as he sits beside me. His phone is already in his hand. A document lies open on the chair near the window, its pages marked in pencil.
He is working.
That is almost reassuring. Cormac does not know how to wake gently, but he knows how to find the sentence that makes a room dangerous.
'If you are awake, Nell, I would prefer you to say so.'
'If you are making coffee, I would prefer to remain asleep.'
His mouth moves. I can hear it in his silence.
'It is coffee.'
'That is generous.'
I sit up, pulling the sheet with me. The room is cold beyond the bed. Snow presses against the window, pale against the dark glass, and his shirt is folded over the back of a chair beside my clothes.
The sight of it gives my body a memory before my mind catches up. His hand at my jaw. His voice asking. My answer given without saying the word he wanted.
We slept together.
The fact sits between us with more weight than the coffee.
Cormac looks at me, then at the phone. He has shaved. His hair has not recovered from my hands.
'You have been awake long enough to prepare a compliance report,' I say.
'I have been awake long enough to understand that Patrick's admission cannot remain outside the file.'
'It is not your file.'
'It was my file until I withdrew. The conduct is still known to me.'
His voice has gone formal. Full name territory. He does that when he is frightened or when he believes emotion may make him careless.
'You said you wanted a clean job.'
'I do.'
'Patrick is not the job.'
