I Gave My Sister My Fiancé and Watched Them Fall novel · Chapter 24 of 24

Chapter 24: Both

The first spring came to the border cabin on a morning when the river ran loud and brown below the ridge.

I stood on the porch in my shirtsleeves with a cup of tea, and the grass in the yard was green for the first time since I had lived there.

I paid no coppers for wood anymore.

The Ashfall woodcutter had stacked a winter's worth against the north wall in November and refused to take a single coin.

"Yvaine."

Hamish came out behind me with his hair still wet and put his chin on my shoulder.

"You're up early," I said.

"You left the bed."

"I wanted to see the thaw."

"It's a good one." He kissed the side of my neck.

His arms came around my waist, and I leaned back into him.

The crescent on his chest pressed warm against my spine.

"I need to ask you something," he said.

"Ask."

"The pack hall at Ashfall has stood empty on the hill since my father died. I've slept in it twice."

"I know. I've seen the roof."

"It needs work. It's a good house, with a long table and a fire you could stand in. It would be yours, if you wanted it."

"And the cabin?"

"The cabin is the cabin." He turned me around in his arms. "You chose it when you had nothing, and you can keep it if you'd rather. I won't ask you to give up a roof you paid for."

"Which do you want?"

"I want whichever you want," he said. "I mean that. Cabin or hall."
