Chapter 19: The Key

Gio's POV

The six old men came to the yard on Thursday at noon, because I had asked them to.

They came in six dark cars and parked along the chain-link in a row.

They got out one at a time in their good overcoats.

I had known them all my life.

They had held me at my christening and taught me to play briscola.

One of them had slipped me a twenty at my mother's funeral.

I stood in the open door of the yard office with the cold coming off the harbor.

I wore no coat.

I had decided I would take nothing in with me that my father had paid for.

They gathered in the gravel in a loose half circle.

Lorenzo was not among them.

His hand was in a cast to the elbow, and he had been told he would be unwelcome.

"Giovanni," the eldest said.

He was eighty and very thin, with a voice that rasped.

"You called us here.

"It is not the custom."

"No," I said.

"I know."

"Your father says there is a matter of the seat."

"There is," I said.

I had a sheet of paper in my hand.
