Chapter 22: The Driver

The limping driver caught Lorenzo's cast in both hands before it reached my face.

I had not seen him come.

He had been standing against the wall by the sideboard in his black coat, as he had stood at every dinner in that house for twenty-seven years.

He pressed Lorenzo's arm down against the table with the steady strength of a man who had spent his life hauling car doors open.

Lorenzo shrieked.

The cast covered the hand Gio had broken, and the driver held it flat on the tablecloth between the bread and the butter.

"Let go of me, you cripple," Lorenzo said.

"I'll have your job."

"No, sir," the driver said.

"You won't."

He looked down the table at Salvatore.

It was the first time in my life I had seen him look the old man in the eye.

"Mr. Brandisi," he said.

"I am sixty years old, and I have driven your car for thirty-nine years.

"I have never said a word against you.

"I am going to say a few now, and then I will go home."

"Sit down," Salvatore said.

"No," the driver said.

"I was twenty years old in 1997.

"I sat in the back seat of a second car at the yard gate with the window down.

"I saw Eino Saari get out of your sedan and walk into that shed because you sent him for something.

"I saw you walk in after him, and come out alone, and pull the chain across the door.

"I heard him knock.

"I heard it for ten minutes.
