Chapter 9: Two Harbors

Highway 61 runs up the North Shore with the lake on one side and the black spruce on the other.

Gio drove it with the window cracked an inch and the heater on low.

It was Saturday and the sky was the color of pewter.

I rode with my boots up on the dash and the white cap in my lap, and for forty minutes neither of us said a word.

It was the easiest silence I had ever shared with anyone.

"My mother's cabin," he said at last.

"Past Two Harbors.

"I haven't been up since she died."

"When was that?" I asked.

"Eleven years ago," he said.

"Why are we going?" I asked.

"Because nobody in my family knows I still have the key," he said.

He turned onto a gravel track that ran down through the spruce, and the cabin sat at the bottom.

It was small, built of logs gone silver, with a stone chimney and a porch that looked out on a rocky strip of beach.

Waves broke white on the stones.

Ice was forming in the shallows, in thin gray plates.

He had to put his shoulder to the door.

Inside it smelled of dust and cold ash and cedar.

There was a woodstove, a plank table, a narrow iron bed under a quilt, and a bearskin rug in front of the hearth, thin and flat from forty years of boots.
