Chapter 12: Gold Digger
I read the word three times.
Denied.
It didn't change.
"Okay," I said.
"It's not okay."
"It's what I expected, Clifford. It's fine."
He threw the phone onto the bed so hard it bounced.
Then he sat down next to me and put his face in his hands.
Louise came in from the living room with her hair flattened on one side.
"What happened?"
Clifford told her.
Louise said a word our mother would have washed out of her mouth with soap.
At eight o'clock, we went to the hospital anyway.
Clifford said Paul Merriman didn't care what a letter said until she'd seen the patient herself.
Her office was on the ninth floor, with a window over the river and a desk buried in paper.
She was a small woman with short gray hair and tortoiseshell glasses and a blouse printed with orange and green birds.
She didn't stand up when we came in.
She pointed at a chair.
"Sit, Miss Duffy. You're gray."
I sat.
She pulled my scans up on her monitor without asking anybody's permission.
