Chapter 14: The Podium
I started walking down the aisle.
Clifford walked beside me with his hand under my elbow.
Louise walked on my other side.
Heads turned row by row as we passed.
I heard my name.
I heard "the gala."
I heard somebody say, "Is that her?"
Cynthia saw us when we were halfway down.
She didn't stop.
She didn't even slow down.
"And in fact," she said smoothly, "here she is now. Along with my son, who I'm afraid has been very badly used."
A murmur went through the room.
Sabrina twisted around in the front row.
She saw Clifford's hand on my arm, and her mouth went tight.
"Colleen Duffy took a Foundation check for two hundred thousand dollars five years ago," Cynthia went on. "She promised to leave my son alone."
She let that sit.
"Last week, she broke that promise, the night of his engagement, and I'm told she's now trying to get herself onto a Foundation trial she has no business being on."
"She's dying," someone called from the back.
"Many people are," Cynthia said. "We don't let them jump the line because they used to date a Wexley."
