Chapter 15: First Dose
I didn't hit the stage.
Something caught me first.
Arms, and a jacket that smelled like hospital soap, and a voice right against my ear.
"I've got you. Coll. I've got you."
Then there were a lot of voices.
Somebody shouting for a stretcher.
Louise saying my name over and over.
Dr. Merriman, very calm, telling the whole auditorium to sit down and stay out of the aisle.
I went under after that.
When I came up again, I was in a bed by a window.
The window looked over the river.
It was dark outside.
There was a tube in my arm and a clip on my finger and a weight on my hand.
The weight was Clifford's head.
He was asleep in a chair, bent forward, with his cheek on my knuckles and his glasses pushed up crooked on his forehead.
I moved my fingers.
He sat up so fast the chair skidded.
"Hey," I said.
"Hey." His voice was wrecked. "Hey. You're awake."
