Chapter 15: The Cat Sat
I let the message sit for two nights.
On Wednesday at five to nine I parked the Honda on Murray Hill Road and let myself in with the brass key.
The only light in the house came from the kitchen.
Lucio sat at the long wooden table with a pencil in his fist.
Pia sat beside him in her scarlet sweatshirt with her chin on her hand.
Between them lay a first-grade primer with a worn blue cover and a sheet of lined paper.
He looked up when I came in, and he did not stand.
"Bring your glasses?" Pia said.
"I'm wearing them."
"Good. Sit. He has a sentence."
I sat on his other side.
The sheet of lined paper held one word, printed over and over in careful capitals, each row a little straighter than the one above.
LUCIO.
"Fourteen times," Pia said. "That's tonight's homework, and it took him an hour."
"I started with the L backward," Lucio said. "It's a hard letter."
"It is the first letter of your name, you giant."
Her voice shook on it, and she covered it by turning the page of the primer so hard that it tore.
