Chapter 21: The Chairs
"A girl of twenty-three signs a great many things," Nunzio said.
He had not risen.
His voice had not changed, but his hand had gone to the cord of his glasses and closed on it.
"Write your name," the baker said to Pia.
He pushed his own plate aside, and the cloth lay bare in front of her.
Pia took the gold pen off the table and wrote her name across the white linen in a big looping hand.
The baker held the cloth up beside the second page.
He read both slowly, and he did not need to read them.
"Not the same," he said, to fifty men. "Not close."
A low sound ran down both sides of the table.
"A boy who has to spell his own name," Nunzio said, and now the softness had a crack in it, "cannot sit in his father's chair."
I stood up.
I had not planned to.
My chair went back on the boards, and every head turned, and I put both hands on the table.
