Chapter 4: Station 3
"It's midnight," I said.
"It's twelve-fifteen." He threw my bag in the truck bed.
"First week we run a night drill. It's not dark, so we call it night out of respect."
"Who are you?"
"Emory Tolland. Crew lead. I'm your trainer, so you're stuck with me." He opened the passenger door. "Get in. The mosquitoes have already smelled you."
They had.
I slapped three on the way into the cab.
The truck smelled like coffee and wet canvas.
He drove with one wrist on the wheel, past birch trees and gas stations and a hardware store that was open.
At midnight.
"Everything's open," I said.
"Nobody sleeps in June. You'll see." He glanced at me. "You look like you just walked out of something."
"My graduation."
"Like, today?"
"About eleven hours ago."
He was quiet for a second.
"Did you at least get the diploma first?"
"They mail it."
He laughed, a short rough sound.
"Okay, Carmody. You'll fit in fine."
Station 3 was a two-bay brick building at the edge of campus, with the big doors rolled up and the engines shining inside.
A moose was standing in the gravel lot eating a bush.
Emory drove around it.
"Don't pet him," he said.
"I wasn't going to pet the moose."
"Everyone says that."
Upstairs smelled like bread.
A sturdy girl with short red hair and flour on her sweatshirt came out of the kitchen at a run.
She hugged me before I'd put my bag down.
"You're here! You're the new one! I'm Dodie, I'm your bunkmate, I'm from Anchorage!"
