Chapter 12: The Orchard
The pack made a path for me without being asked.
I walked it with blood running down my leg, in a torn shirt, with Kellan a step behind me and Hester behind him.
My father stood at the end of it with his hat crushed in his hands.
He had not moved since Osric said the word.
He was a big man, my father, who used to lift me to the highest branch of the apple tree so I could see the whole valley.
He looked small now.
"Father," I said.
He flinched.
"What did the orchard cost?"
"Brigid." His voice was cracked. "Not here."
"Here," I said. "You've waited fifteen years to say it in the dark. You'll say it in front of them."
The pack closed in behind me.
I heard people shifting, and the creak of boots, and one child asking a question and being shushed.
My father looked at Kellan.
Kellan looked back at him and said nothing at all.
"The orchard was never ours," my father said at last, to the ground. "Three generations of Harlows rented it from the Drummonds. Every harvest we paid in apples, and every spring I was afraid we'd lose it."
I waited.
"Aldric came to our door on the morning Nessa died."
I felt my skin go tight.
"You were out at the creek. Your mother was at the stove." His throat worked. "He sat down at the kitchen table. He had wet sleeves. He put a paper in front of me, and it was the deed to the orchard, signed over to me."
"Why?"
"He told me what he had done."
