Chapter 6: Her Terms

I woke in a bed with a down quilt over me, and for a moment I did not know the ceiling.

The light in the window was low and orange.

It was evening, and I had slept through a whole day.

Hester was sitting in the corner with her glasses on her forehead and a bowl in her lap.

"Mm," she said. "Still alive."

"Where am I?"

"The Alpha's house. His own bed, if you care to know." She sniffed. "He's been on the stairs since noon. He wouldn't come in till you woke, and he wouldn't go to bed either."

My shoulder ached, and my breath rattled.

I had a whole speech ready, and none of it mattered.

Nessa's name was still not carved anywhere in that valley.

The man who stood beside Aldric at the creek was walking free.

If I died in this bed, both of those things stayed buried.

I was not dying for my pride.

"Tell him to come in," I said.

Kellan came in so fast that he must have been standing just outside the door.

He stopped three steps from the bed with his hands open at his sides.

"I'll take the bite," I said.

Something went through his shoulders.

"I have terms," I said.

"All right."

"You haven't heard them."

"All right," he said again.

"One. No pardon, and no apology. You say that word and I'll spit it back in your face. You earn it, or you don't."

"Yes."

"Two. You sleep on the floor."

"Yes."

"Three. You touch me when the bite needs it and when Hester says I'll die otherwise, and at no other time."

His eyes went to my mouth and away.

"Yes."

"Four. You never call me family. I'm not your sister, and I'm not your nurse, and I'm not the girl who walked you to school."

That one landed.

I watched it land.
