Chapter 4: After Curfew

I went to the east tower at midnight, alone, because I had never once been told to come alone by anyone who wanted something good from me.

The door at the top of the stairs stood open.

The Warden's office was a round room with a desk, a lamp and one narrow window that looked out at the red hill.

Ivo Stannard stood at the window with his back to me.

"Close the door," he said.

I closed it.

"Sit."

I stayed standing. "I'd rather hear it first."

He turned around.

In the lamplight the ridge on his temple was pale and smooth, and I made myself look at his eyes instead.

They were dark, almost black.

"Fair," he said. "I have never taken a private student. This year it's you."

"Why?"

"Because your public record says Beta, and I've watched a Beta walk across my courtyard who walked with a weight on her back, and never once put it down."

"I'm tired. That's all."

"Maybe."

He came around the desk.

On its surface lay a thick grey folder, and the black wax seal on its flap had been cut cleanly in half.

I looked at it.

He saw me looking and didn't move it.

"Here are my terms," he said. "Training happens on the floor in the tower basement. Only there. Never in your dorm, never in this office."

"That sounds fair."

"And you don't leave a mark on anyone that the healers have to ask about."
