Chapter 21: Goodbye, Aunt Daph

Margot's POV

Daphne's lawyer called on Tuesday to say that his client wished to see me once, in person, for ten minutes.

"No," Rafe said, when I told him.

"I know."

"She'll say anything."

"I know that too."

I stood at the sink with my hands in the water and thought about Ivy's face over the bagel.

"Ivy asked me last night whether I'd tell Aunt Daph that she wasn't mad," I said. "She made me promise."

"Margot."

"I'm not going to forgive her. I'm going to keep a promise to a five-year-old."

He looked at me for a long time.

"I'll drive you. I'll wait in the car."

On Wednesday morning he parked outside her building and put the car in neutral.

"Ten minutes," he said. "If you're not out, I'm coming up."

"I'll be out."

I took the stairs.

The door to her apartment was open, and the living room was full of boxes.

The couch was gone. The lemons were gone from the dresser in the bedroom. The place smelled of cardboard.

She was kneeling on the floor, taping a box shut, in an old college sweatshirt, with no makeup.

She looked up and didn't smile.

"You came," she said.

"I have ten minutes."

"My lease is over on Friday. My father won't take my calls. My mother sends me a text each morning that says only 'Eat.'"

"I'm sorry about your parents."

"Are you?"

"Yes," I said. "It doesn't change anything."

She sat back on her heels.

"The DA's office phoned this morning. They said it would be a misdemeanor, if I plead. I might not go to prison." Her laugh was dry. "Isn't that generous."

I stood by the door with my bag on my shoulder.
