Chapter 9: I Made Her Swear

Margot's POV

Rafe came to Wednesday dinner with a white face and a bag of clementines.

He didn't say anything while the kids showed him their drawings.

He didn't say anything while Rory explained why the red scooter was the best scooter.

Rory said Aunt Daph was the best aunt for bringing it.

I was washing a pot at the sink when I felt him standing behind me.

"I need to talk to you," he said, very low. "Not in here."

I put the pot down.

"Mom," I called. "Can you put on the penguin movie?"

"I'm already putting on the penguin movie," my mother said from the couch.

I took Rafe through the kitchen door into the garage.

My car sat nose in, and the winter coats hung on nails.

He shut the door behind us.

He stood very straight, and his jaw was tight.

"Daphne has been picking up our children from school for years," he said.

I'd braced for something else.

"Rafe."

"On the first of every month. She's on the approved list. The teacher thinks she's their aunt."

"Rafe."

"Our son told me she is their godmother."

"She is."

His face went blank.

"I asked her to be," I said. "The week they were born. I had no one else."

"You told me you told no one."

"I didn't tell you that."

"You said it in your own kitchen." His voice rose.

"I asked her, did you know. She said no. You said you told no one, and I believed you."

"Rafe."

"I'd have believed anything you said."

"She was terrified you'd think she betrayed you. She looked at me and I..."
