Chapter 11: Agata Signs Nothing
Ettore stood behind the door with the pistol held low and one hand on the chair.
"It's his mother," he said, without turning. "Alone, or Dario would have broken it down."
"Open it," I said.
I pulled the blanket around me and sat on the edge of the bed with my mother's rosary in my fist.
He slid the chair away and opened the door.
Agata came in leaning on a black cane I had never seen her use.
She wore her church coat, and her rosary hung at her wrist.
She looked at the narrow bed, at my bare shoulders and at her stepson's open shirt.
Her face showed nothing.
She sat down at the kitchen table without being asked.
"You have ten minutes," she said. "My driver is at the corner, and he thinks I'm at Mass."
She opened her handbag and laid a stack of papers on the oilcloth.
"The committal order," she said. "Dario's signature. The doctor's signature. A stamp from a friend of the doctor's."
"Then why are you here?" Ettore said.
"Read the last page."
I took the papers and turned to the end.
There was a box for the head of household, and it was empty.
"No wife of this family goes into a house with locked doors without the Donna's word," Agata said. "That has been the rule since my husband's mother. My son knows it. He didn't ask me, because he knew what I would say."
"What do you say?" I asked.
"I say that I haven't signed anything," she said. "And I don't intend to."
I stared at her.
She had never once been kind to me.
"Why?" I said.
"Because that girl has sat at my table every Sunday for fifteen years," Agata said, "and last night she stood on my gravel and waved at the window of a woman she was holding down."
