Chapter 22: The Third Pier
On the seventh day Dario came to pier three with his right arm in a sling.
The freighter that would take him to Naples was tied up at the berth, with its ramp down and a crane swinging crates over the hold.
I stood at the end of the planks in my father's old donkey jacket, which Ettore had found in a locker in the office.
Agata's lawyer stood beside me with a leather folder.
Dario stopped four feet away and looked at the jacket.
"It's too big for you," he said.
"I know."
"It was his. I saw him wear it at the wedding, when everyone else wore a suit."
"Sign," I said.
The lawyer opened the folder on the lid of a crate and held out a pen.
Dario signed the divorce first.
His hand shook, and the signature came out ragged.
He signed the second page, which put every share of the Bellandi trust back in my name, and the third, which closed the Santoro Holdings accounts and handed the money in them to the table.
"There's a fourth," I said.
"I know."
He took a folded paper from his coat and gave it to me himself.
It was a deed for a lot on a street in Bensonhurst.
"Fifteen years of taxes are paid," Dario said. "I couldn't sell it. I couldn't build on it. I couldn't go there either, but I paid."
