"Sit down, please," said Aizawa. "You've gone grey."
Shiori sat on the edge of the futon with her hands between her knees.
He did not hurry.
He took off the mended glasses, wiped them on the cardigan, and put them back.
"Two years ago," he said, "I kept the books for the Kuzunoki family, and I was a coward. I'd done it for nineteen years. I knew where all of the money went. I knew about the visit to the bar owner, and I said nothing."
"The bar owner who took back his statement."
"Yes. I knew who had sent the men." Aizawa folded his hands. "It was the old man. It was never the young man. The young man found out afterward, and came to my flat that same night in the rain, and sat on my floor until dawn."
Shiori stared at him.
"He asked me one question. He asked if I would give evidence, if he could find a prosecutor who would hear it and not be bought, and not be frightened, and not be tired." He smiled. "I said no. I said it for a year."
