Chapter 6: Tea

The tea room at the back of the Azabu house had four tatami mats, one scroll, and no window.

Genichiro Kuzunoki knelt at a low iron kettle with his sleeves folded back, and he whisked the tea himself.

A second cushion waited across from him.

Sakaki closed the door on Shiori.

"Sit, daughter."

She knelt and bowed.

He set a bowl in front of her, turned so the best side of it faced her knees.

Shiori drank it as she had been taught at her grandmother's table.

It was perfect.

"You've been well taught," said Genichiro. "Your mother?"

"My grandmother."

"Ah. Your mother's side. From Nagano."

Shiori put the bowl down.

She had never told him that.

"Don't be alarmed. A family looks into a bride." He smiled gently. "I know that you take no sugar, that you were first in your class, and that your father died the winter you were nineteen. He worked himself to death for a company that did not send flowers."

"It sent a card."

"A card. Yes."

He poured a second bowl for himself.

The thing hanging in the alcove behind him looked like a scroll, but Shiori saw now that it wasn't calligraphy.

It was a sheet of paper in a dark wooden frame.

The top line of it read "Indictment: People versus Tatsuya Kuzunoki," in her own typeface.
