Two men were sitting on the pavement outside Shiori's mother's shop.

They were both holding one wrist in the other hand, and one of them was crying quietly.

A folded black knife lay in the gutter.

The blue curtain over the door was untouched, and the little hand-lettered sign in the window said, "Hojicha, 450 yen."

Shiori pushed through the curtain and stopped.

Her mother stood behind the counter in her apron, pouring tea.

On the stool at the end of it, with his shoes lined up neatly by the door, sat Tatsuya Kuzunoki, all six foot six of him, eating a slice of strawberry cake off one of her good plates.

He rose when he saw Shiori.

He had to duck under the lantern.

"Shiori," he said. "I hope you don't mind. I brought your mother a cake from Ginza."

"Mama."

"You didn't tell me your husband was so tall," said her mother, in her mildest voice. "He's going to hit his head on that lantern."

"What happened to the men outside?"

"One of them had a knife in my doorway." Her mother set the teapot down. "Your husband took it from him. Then he apologized to me for the noise."

"I'm very sorry about the noise," Tatsuya said, to her, and bowed from the waist.

Shiori looked at the knuckles of his right hand.

They were red and unbroken.

He had done it so fast that he hadn't even torn his cuff.

"Mama, did he..."
