Chapter 16: The Napkin
Nick was on his feet before I was.
We ran along the balcony in our socks, and I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from calling her name.
The stairs were black, and I took them by counting.
At nineteen I felt the carpet, and then the cold tile of the kitchen.
I found the light switch by the doorway with my hand and flipped it.
Five lay on the floor in front of the fridge, on the one square of tile the kitchen dome couldn't see.
One was kneeling beside her.
He had two fingers pressed under her jaw, and an empty glass stood on the counter above him.
He looked up at me, and his face was full of sorrow.
Nick dropped to his knees on her other side and moved One's hand away.
He felt her throat, and then her wrist, and then he bent his cheek down to her mouth.
After a long moment, he sat back on his heels and shook his head once.
I got down on the tile and took Five's hand.
It was still warm.
