The Wall went dark, and the four of them looked at me.
I said the rule over to myself, the way I had on the first night.
"The last player," I said out loud. "He said the last player."
Three got it first.
"Four and four," he said. "It's four and four again."
"If all five of us put our hands on that door at the same time," I said, "there isn't a last player."
"Even him?" Eighteen asked.
She was looking at One.
"Even him," I said. "I want him in front of a judge."
Nick didn't say anything, but his jaw went tight.
One took off his cap, looked into it, and put it back on.
"Smart girl," he said, and laughed. "Five hands on the door. I'm in."
At four o'clock the gold elevator took us down past the casino floor to the garage.
The doors opened on P3.
It was a low concrete level with yellow lines on the floor and no cars at all.
The air was cold and smelled of oil and the ocean.
Eighteen stopped at the edge of the elevator and wouldn't step out.
