Chapter 24: What He Never Tried
Roisin's POV
On Sunday evening the light came low and gold across the water.
I drove the hearse out to Winthrop with Mal beside me in his shirtsleeves.
He had asked to ride in it.
I had stopped asking why.
My brother had called from the hospital at noon, loud and indignant, to say the food was disgusting and the nurses were ugly and he wanted to know when he could see the boat.
"Spring," I'd said. "When you can lift a crate."
"Whose boat is it?"
"Yours. It's in your name by Friday. You can learn the traps from Tadhg."
There had been a long silence on the line.
"Ro," Donal had said, in a small voice.
"Don't cry on the phone, it's disgusting."
"I'm not," said Donal.
"You are."
"I'm going to be good at it."
"I know," I'd said. "Dad was."
The gravel spit was the same as it had been.
At the end of it, where the ruin had stood, a boathouse stood in pale new cinder block.
Someone had hung a tin roof.
Someone had put in a door.
Tadhg's work, and the elder's grandson, and God knew how many men with their sleeves rolled, and not one of them had told me.
