Chapter 7: The King Who Couldn't Sleep
Ewan MacLachlan stood in his own bedroom at two in the morning with another man's shirt pressed to his face.
It was the grey henley Kit had worn into the cabin.
He had picked it up off the floor without thinking and carried it back in his coat.
Now he could not make himself put it down.
It smelled of snow, and wolf, and the sweet sharp note under both that was only Kit.
He breathed it in until his lungs hurt.
"Pathetic," he said aloud.
His voice sounded strange in the empty room.
He threw the shirt on the bed, and then he picked it up again.
Garth had caught him earlier in the hall outside the study.
"You haven't slept since the auction," Garth had said. "You broke a chair at supper."
"It was already cracked."
"It was oak, Ewan. You put your hand through the arm."
"I'll have it mended."
"I'm not talking about the chair."
