Chapter 11: The Council Ring

The dean came to his door on Sunday morning at nine, in a navy coat, with a thermos.

I was in his kitchen in his gray sweater and nothing else, with a mug of tea in both hands.

Elias had gone to the door in his jeans.

I heard her voice in the hall, level and pleasant, and then I heard her say, "I won't stay long."

She stayed twenty minutes.

I stood behind the kitchen door with my back to the wall, and listened.

"I wanted to see how you were settling in," Ragnhild said.

"The house was your brother's, you know.

"I had it aired for you."

"I'm grateful," Elias said.

"I'm sure you are," she said.

There was the clink of her thermos.

"The video has made the rounds," she said.

"The council has asked me about it.

"There's a conduct rule with your name on it and a student on your arm, and some of the old families are not pleased."

"The student dropped my section before anything occurred," Elias said.

"So I've been told," Ragnhild said.

"It is the rule as written, Dean," Elias said.

"By you," Ragnhild said.

"By me," Elias said.

Her voice thinned.

"I want you to consider what you are doing, Elias.
