Elias's POV
She walked ahead of me up the seawall steps with her left wrist bare and held a little away from her body.
She carried it like something she was minding for someone else.
I let her go ahead.
I had earned the distance.
The rain had started again by the time we reached the top.
She stopped under the lamp at the corner of Rathbone and looked at the mark in the yellow light.
"It's not going to wash off," she said.
"No," I said.
"I keep thinking it should," she said.
"I know," I said.
She turned her head and looked at me.
Her eyes were red and her mouth was set.
She was nineteen years old, and she was the angriest person I had ever stood beside.
"Tell me why seven days," she said.
"Not the rule.
"I heard the rule.
"Tell me what you did with the seven days."
I had known she would ask.
I had rehearsed the answer in four different rooms, and none of the rehearsals survived the look she gave me.
"I went to the harbour master's hut on the Wednesday," I said.
"I went again on the Friday, and the clerk told me the book had been changed."
I looked at the rain on the pavement.
"On Saturday I sat in my brother's kitchen with his ring in my hand and tried to decide whether to knock on your door."
"You didn't," she said.
"No," I said.
"You came to the loft instead."
"You asked me to," I said.
"I would have walked into the channel if you had asked me to."
Her jaw moved.
"That's not an answer," she said.
"It is the whole answer," I said.
"I wanted you.
"I found out whose mark you carried.
"I told myself that if I said it, you would look at me and see him.
"Every time you touched me, you would be touching a dead man's brother.
