Chapter 15: The Oar Rack
It was raining so hard at the boathouse that the dock boards smoked.
Elias stood at the foot of the outside stair with the rain coming off his hood.
I stood on the fourth step above him.
We looked at each other.
It was the same stair, and the same dock.
We had come down from the cedar house for a walk, because neither of us could sleep and the first ferry to Lopez was hours away.
Neither of us had said where the walk was going.
"Not the loft," I said.
"No?" he said.
"The loft is mine," I said.
"I took it back.
"I want somewhere I haven't taken back yet."
I came down the steps.
At the bottom, the oar racks stood in a long black row under the overhang of the boathouse roof.
The sound of the channel was loud behind them.
The bench was still there.
Nobody had moved it.
It was only a bench.
"There," I said.
I pointed to the wall behind the last rack.
It was dry back there, a narrow slot between the rack and the planked wall.
A beam ran across it at the height of my ribs.
The racks hid it from the dock.
"Liv," he said.
"Anyone could walk down."
"Nobody walks down in this," I said.
He looked at me, at the slot, at the rain.
His mouth did something I had come to know.
"I wrote a rule for myself," he said.
"I do not take the lead in a first scene."
"It isn't a first scene," I said.
"You took the lead in your hall."
"You told me to," he said.
"I'm not telling you tonight," I said.
"I'm tired of being the one who decides.
"I would like you to ruin me."
His eyes went black.
I watched the whole of him change.
