Nobody at the gate moved.

The bearded lobsterman set down his coffee, stepped forward, and held out both wrists.

"Go on, then," he said. "Serve me."

"Serve me," said the bakery woman.

"Me," said Fern's wife, without looking up from her knitting.

"Me," said a boy of about fourteen.

Forty-one people said it, one after another, and Bryce's face went from pink to white.

"This isn't funny," he said.

"It's a little funny," Ansel said.

Bryce looked at his lawyer, who was studying his shoes.

"We'll see you in court," Bryce said, and walked back up the gravel to his convertible.

He peeled out so hard that the gravel rattled against the gate.

The lawyer ran for the back seat.

I leaned into Fern's shoulder, laughing so hard I couldn't stand, and I felt Ansel's eyes on me from three feet away.
