Chapter 22: Thunderstorm
I said the word in the parking lot.
I said it to the roof of his truck with my forehead against the cold metal, while the Legion hall emptied behind us.
"Take me home," I said.
"Your home?"
"Yours is closer."
He didn't ask again.
He opened my door, and I climbed in, and he drove with both hands on the wheel and his jaw set.
The storm broke when we were two miles out.
It had been building all day over the water, a dark wall, and now it came down in sheets.
The wipers could not keep up.
Lightning lit the shore road white, and thunder followed so close that the cab shook.
"Slow down," I said.
"I am."
"You're gripping that wheel," I said.
"I know."
Halfway across the low stretch where the causeway ran, the engine coughed, caught, and died.
The truck rolled on a few yards and stopped.
Ansel turned the key, and it ground without catching.
"Water in the line," he said. "Or the distributor."
He tried it again.
Rain hammered the roof.
