Chapter 24: One Night, You Said
He opened the door before I knocked.
He stood in the yellow light in an old T-shirt and gray sweatpants, barefoot, with his hair on end.
He hadn't slept either.
"Gen," he said.
"Fern told me."
His face went still.
"The envelopes," I said. "The account. The coffee can I threw at you."
"Gen."
"I'm not here to forgive you," I said.
"All right."
"I want that to be clear," I said.
"It's clear."
"I'm here because I've wanted you for three weeks, and I'm tired of it."
He didn't move.
I watched the muscle jump in his jaw.
"One night, you said," Ansel said, low. "That was the rule. One night, and in the morning I drive you to the bus."
My stomach dropped and heat poured in behind it.
"That was the rule," I said. "I'm breaking it."
"Say that again."
"I'm breaking it. Let me in."
He stepped back.
I walked past him into the one warm room, and I heard the door shut and the lock turn.
He came up behind me.
He didn't touch me.
I felt the heat of his body against my back, and his breath moved my hair.
"Last chance," he said into my ear. "Tell me to take you home."
"Take me to bed."
His hands closed on my shoulders.
He turned me around.
His eyes were dark, and his mouth came down on mine so slowly that I had time to see it coming.
It was not the truck.
It was long and deep and steady, and I opened to it, and he held my face and took his time.
By the time he lifted his head, my knees were gone.
