Chapter 34: The Gala
The Pettengill Marine Christmas gala was held in the ballroom of the Port Gannet Yacht Club on the second Saturday of December.
Tickets were five hundred dollars a plate.
I had one, because Fern's wife had sold her mother's brooch to a woman at the Legion who knew a woman who was in the club.
I did not wear a gown.
I wore my father's navy pea coat, buttoned to the throat, over black trousers and my good boots.
In the right inside pocket was a sheet of thick cream paper, folded once, soft from six months of being handled.
I carried it into the gala.
Ansel walked in beside me until the coat check.
"You're sure," he said.
"I'm sure."
"I could stand next to you."
"You'll stand at the back," I said. "It has to be me first. You know that."
He put his hand over mine on the lapel.
"I'll be at the back."
I went in alone.
The ballroom glittered.
There were two hundred people in black tie, a string quartet, a model of Pettengill Landing under glass on a pedestal, and a bar shaped like the bow of a boat.
Constance stood on the dais in a silver gown with Bryce at her side.
