Chapter 12: Six Hundred Guests
The dabke line went twice around the Sarafa banquet hall before Marwan held out his hand to me.
Six hundred guests filled the room, Chaldean on the left, Lebanese on the right, and the drums made the glasses shake on the tables.
The groom led the line with a white handkerchief over his head.
The bride sat in white on the dais, with her mother crying beside her and the women ululating from the walls.
"Dance," Marwan said.
"In front of all of them?"
"In front of all of them."
I put my hand in his.
His fingers closed around mine, warm and hard, and he drew me into the line between his cousin and an aunt.
The fortieth night had come and gone on the twenty-third of December.
Neither of us had mentioned it, and my key was still in my own door.
My father was at a table near the back, in his good coat.
He saw me and looked at his plate.
The step was easy.
I had learned it at fifteen at my cousin's wedding, and my feet remembered it.
For a moment, in a green dress with my hand in Marwan Karam's, I was only a woman dancing.
