Chapter 10: Five Hundred Thousand

Armand Guidry came to my grandmother's porch on Friday afternoon, in a pressed shirt, with his hat in his hand.

He had never in his life come to her porch.

He used to send a driver with the Christmas ham.

I was on the swing with a laundry basket of Lou's clothes when his black truck pulled in.

I put the basket down and stood.

He climbed the steps slowly.

He was seventy-one and had lost some weight, and the silver of his hair had gone white at the temples.

His eyes were exactly the same.

"Odette," he said. "You look well."

"What do you want, Mr. Guidry?"

"I had a long talk with my son this morning."

"I'm sure you did," I said.

"He tells me you've given him a child."

"Gabe told you what the lab said."

"I didn't need a lab," Armand said. "I had a man check the school roll. A girl, five years old, named Eloise Thibodeaux, born in Mobile on the fourth of October."

My stomach dropped.

"You went to her school."

"I went to the principal, who was happy to oblige." He smiled with the lower half of his face. "She's a Guidry."

"She's a Thibodeaux."

"She'll be a Guidry by the new year."

He reached into his back pocket and took out a folded slip of green paper.

He held it between two fingers.

"I'm a practical man," he said. "I like to start with the numbers."

I looked at it.

It was a bank check, drawn on the mill's account, made out to me.

It said five hundred thousand dollars.

"I'm told Mobile is expensive," he said. "That sum buys a house there and a good start. It buys you out of this, honey. You've done a fine job of raising her. Now she belongs where her blood is."
