Chapter 17: Papa
Mémère came home from the hospital on a Wednesday, with a plate in her hip and a walker she called the Contraption.
Lou decorated it that same afternoon.
She glued bottle caps all down the front bar, in rainbow order, with a glue gun I wasn't supposed to have given her.
"It looks like a parade float," Mémère said.
"It's a bionic walker," said Lou.
"I'll take it to Mass."
By Sunday the kitchen smelled of onions, bell pepper and celery in hot oil, and the radio was playing a scratchy Clifton Chenier record.
Gabe stood at the stove in his stocking feet with a wooden spoon.
He was making a roux.
It's a patient thing.
You stir flour into oil for a long time without stopping until the color goes from blond to peanut butter to chocolate.
Lou stood on a chair beside him, stirring with both hands on the handle of a spoon.
"Don't stop," Gabe told her.
"My arm's tired."
"Switch arms. Don't stop."
"What happens if I stop?" Lou asked.
"It burns."
"Then what?"
