Chapter 24: Harvest Day
Gabe's POV
Harvest Day had been my mother's idea, thirty-five years back.
She had wanted one Saturday every fall when the mill opened its gates and fed the parish, with a choir and a band and a long line of tables under the oaks.
She died when I was nineteen, and my father kept it as a monument.
By ten that morning there were two thousand people on the grounds.
I stood behind the stage in the wings, in my good shirt, with a folded napkin in my pocket that had nothing written on it.
I had tried to write a speech three times.
There was nothing a man could say that would give her back those years.
The stage was a flatbed trailer with bunting along the front.
At the left was a lectern with a microphone, and at the back a big white screen.
A man in a gray suit from the governor's office sat in the front row, waving a paper fan.
The choir from St. Bernard's finished a hymn and sat down.
My father came up the steps in his best coat.
He looked rested.
