Chapter 4: Thirty-Six Weeks

At two in the morning in the first week of October, I woke on my back in a warm wet bed.

I knew what it was before I put my hand down.

I was thirty-six weeks along, in a one-bedroom on Dauphin Street with a window unit and a night job dispatching tow trucks for a man who paid me in cash.

Nobody was in the apartment but me.

I lay still, with my hand between my legs, and looked at the dark ceiling.

The phone on the nightstand lit up.

[Task: Call 911. Now.]

I had said those words to strangers a thousand times on the night desk.

Tow trucks, wrecks, people stuck on the Bayway with a flat and a bad feeling.

My own voice came out calm and flat, and it didn't sound like mine.

"I'm thirty-six weeks pregnant and I'm bleeding. I have a history of abruption. The address is eleven-twenty Dauphin, apartment four, the second floor. The door is unlocked."

I gave it twice.

The operator told me to lie on my left side.

The phone lit again.

[Task: Lie on your left. Do not stand up.]

"I'm doing it," I said, out loud, to a phone.

Then I called out the one thing I could, because there was no one to say it to.

"Gabe."

It was a small sound in a small room.

He didn't hear it from three hundred miles away.

The paramedics came up the stairs two at a time, a man and a woman.

I heard them stop in the doorway, and then I heard the woman say, "It's a lot."

They had me on a gurney in less time than I could have counted.
