Chapter 6: The Old Law

Don Aurelio did not tell me at the long table.

He led me into the coat room off the main hall, with his cane tapping on the marble and two of his men at the door.

Ettore stopped at the threshold, and one of the Falcone men put a hand on his chest.

"It's all right," I said.

"It isn't," Ettore said, and stayed where he was, in the doorway, with his eyes on me.

The coat room smelled of cedar and cigars.

Aurelio sat down on a bench between two rows of fur coats and laid the cane across his knees.

"My son behaved badly," he said. "I will say it first, so you can't accuse me of hiding it."

"He fed his mistress my cake."

"He did a stupid thing in front of too many people." He shrugged. "Young men do. It's not a reason to burn down twenty-three years."

"Twenty-three years is my age."

"Exactly. The alliance has been your whole life, Gianna. You stood in this room as an infant, in a white christening gown, and your father put your hand in mine."

I said nothing.

"Come back to Cesare. Wear the ring. We'll announce the wedding for the spring. Fiora will go to her family in Philadelphia, and she'll have what she needs."

"And the baby?"

"A baby has no say in the Families."

"It does in mine."
