Neve's POV
I did not wait for morning.
I made him dress and I made him drive, and by three o'clock we stood in the kitchen of the row house with the overhead light on, neither of us sitting down.
I had held it in for three years.
I had carried it through three airports and a long winter in a flat above a chip shop.
It had worn a smooth groove in me.
"Say it," Ansel said.
He leaned against the counter with his arms crossed.
He looked like a man at the edge of a drop.
"You went to the airport twice," I said.
"Yes," he said.
"I stood at a window in Leith for three winters waiting for the phone to ring."
"I know," he said.
"You don't know." My voice broke, and I hated it. "You sent me two thousand dollars a month like a pension. Not a postcard. Not one line."
"I did not know what to write," he said.
"You could have written, *Come home.*"
"You left," said Ansel.
