Chapter 11: His Place

Wyatt read the last message a fifth time and put the phone in his pocket.

"The crash was on County Road 9," he said. "A driver hit Daisy's car and kept going. The sheriff never found him."

"I'm sorry."

"I called the sheriff's office every month for a year."

His voice was flat and tired.

"She says she looked into it after the mall. After one afternoon."

"She's baiting you."

"I know." He turned to me. "And I want to call her anyway. That's what scares me."

"Then don't call her tonight."

"Okay."

"Call the sheriff tomorrow, and call her never."

He almost smiled.

"That's an order?"

"It's the first one I've given you."

"I'm taking it."

We walked out of the diner into the cold.

His truck sat at the curb.

His apartment was above the hardware store, six blocks away, and neither of us said anything about it.

He put his hand out, palm up, under the streetlight.

I looked at it for exactly as long as it took to be sure.

Then I took it.

The stairs to his door were narrow and creaked on every step.

He unlocked the door with the hand that wasn't holding mine.

There was a couch, a table with one chair, a lamp with a green shade and a window over the street.

It was clean and empty, and it smelled like him.
