Chapter 15: The Naming
Ruby's POV
Wyatt got into Laney's car with his jaw set and put the pen microphone in my palm.
"She says you were on County Road 9 the week Daisy died," he said.
"I was seventeen. I was at the library or at home."
"I know."
"I never walked out there in my life."
"I know that too." He shut his eyes. "I wanted you to hear her do it. Now I'm not going near her again without you in the car."
Laney, in the driver's seat, turned the key in the ignition with great care.
"I'm going to say something nice about him," she said to me, "and then I'm going to drive."
"Don't."
"He didn't take the bait. I'm going to cry."
She didn't cry.
She drove us to the diner and made Wyatt eat two eggs.
Savannah went quiet for two days.
On Sunday night, at 9:40, she posted a video.
I found out because my phone started buzzing on the nightstand and didn't stop.
She sat on her bedroom floor in a plain white shirt with no makeup, under a ring light.
"I've been trying to protect someone, and I can't anymore," she said. "Her name is Ruby Hazlitt. She goes to the community college on Ash Street."
She said my full name twice.
"She was my best friend. She filmed me being dragged into the woods and did nothing. She followed me to my own signing. And now she's working her way into the life of someone I care about, someone who's grieving."
She looked straight into the lens.
"I'm not saying this for revenge. I'm saying it because I'm scared."
The comments came in like water through a ceiling.
They found my college page first, then the parks district's staff list, then my mother's name and the hospital where she worked.
