Chapter 8: Fan Day

The line for the signing went past the food court and wrapped around a fountain.

Wyatt and I stood near the back, among girls in matching Lakeview T-shirts.

Most of them had their phones out already.

"You can still wait outside," Wyatt said.

"No."

"You don't have to prove anything to her."

"I'm not here for her."

He glanced down at me.

I kept my eyes on the stage ahead.

It was a pink platform with a banner, a table covered in posters and a camera crew from a local station.

Savannah sat behind the table in the green sundress from the poster.

Her hair was curled and her smile was perfect.

She signed each poster, hugged each fan and said every name twice.

I watched her do it for forty minutes.

She was better than she'd been in January.

She had been practicing.

At two o'clock, the line pushed us up to the front.

Wyatt held out a poster he had bought from the table.

"Who should I make this out to?" Savannah asked, looking down at her pen.

"Daisy," he said.

"What a pretty name."

She looked up.

Her face changed.

Her eyes went wide and her pen fell on the table.

"Oh my God," she said. "You're the man from the gate."

The fans nearest the stage turned.

"The man who ran in," Savannah said, louder. "The one with the wrench. I never got to thank you."

She came around the table and threw her arms around his neck.

Wyatt stood very straight.

He lifted one hand and patted her shoulder.
